Remove an image background for free at full resolution
Images removes backgrounds on your device at full resolution, with no credits and no upload. How to do it, what works well, and when to pay instead.
Images removes the background from a photo for free, at full resolution, on your own device. Add the photo, turn on background removal, and download the cut-out as a PNG or WebP with a transparent background. There are no credits, no account and no watermark, and the photo is never uploaded.
remove.bg gives free previews of up to 0.25 megapixels (for example 625 by 400 pixels) on its website, and a full-resolution result costs one credit per image, according to its help center on October 19, 2026. For every free option side by side, see the best free remove.bg alternatives.
Step by step
- Open Images and add your photo, or drop it anywhere on the page.
- Turn on Remove background. The first time, your browser downloads the background removal model and keeps it, so later images start sooner.
- Wait a moment. Each image takes a little time, because your own device is doing the work.
- Check the result with the before and after slider.
- Save as PNG or WebP to keep the background transparent. JPG cannot be see-through, so a JPG cut-out gets a white background.
- Download one image, or all of them at once.
The cut-out is the full size of your photo. There is no small preview with an upsell to the real one.
What works well, and what does not
Background removal models are good at a clear subject against a distinct background:
- people in portraits and headshots,
- products on a table or a plain backdrop,
- pets, cars, furniture and other solid objects.
They find these harder:
- fine hair and fur, especially against a busy background,
- glass, smoke and anything see-through,
- a subject the same color as what is behind it,
- several overlapping subjects.
On the hard cases, paid tools and careful manual editing can still do a cleaner job. Try Images first. If the edges are not good enough for, say, a print ad, that is when paying for a cut-out makes sense.
Tips for a cleaner cut-out
- Contrast helps. A dark jacket against a light wall separates better than navy against black.
- Light the subject evenly. Hard shadows can be mistaken for part of the subject.
- Start with a large, sharp photo. More detail at the edges gives the model more to work with.
Why on-device matters
Most background removers upload your photo to their servers. For a product shot, that may be fine. For photos of people, especially children, or anything unreleased, it means a copy on someone else's server. With Images, the model runs in your browser and the photo never leaves your device. Location and camera data is stripped from saved images by default, too.
That is also why it is free. Your device does the work, so it costs us nothing to run. More in why these apps are free.
Other free options
- Your phone or computer may already do this. Recent iPhones, iPads and Macs can lift the subject out of a photo: on an iPhone, touch and hold the subject in Photos. Recent versions of Paint on Windows have a remove background button.
- rembg is an open source tool for developers that removes backgrounds from the command line or in code.
- remove.bg is fast and polished, and worth paying for if you need many cut-outs of hard subjects.
Need smaller files too? The same app compresses, resizes and converts. See how to compress images without uploading them.
Questions
Can I remove a background for free at full resolution?
Yes. OpenApps Images removes backgrounds on your own device at the full resolution of your photo, with no credits, no account and no watermark. Save the result as PNG or WebP to keep the background transparent.
Are my photos uploaded when I remove a background?
No. OpenApps Images runs the background removal model in your browser. The photo stays on your device and is never sent to a server.
Why does my cut-out have a white background?
It was saved as a JPG, and JPG files cannot be transparent, so OpenApps Images fills the background with white. Save as PNG or WebP instead to keep the background see-through.
Does background removal cost credits?
No. OpenApps Images removes backgrounds with an open model that runs on your device, so there are no credits and no price per image.
What kinds of photos work best?
A clear subject against a distinct background works best: people, products, pets and solid objects. Fine hair, fur, glass and subjects the same color as the background are harder, and a paid tool or manual editing may do better on those.
